Blog:World Sight Day 2016
Yesterday, people all over the planet celebrated World Sight Day, an annual day of raising public awareness to the health issues of blindness and vision impairment. Dedicated as the second Thursday of October, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) coordinate the cause. Sponsors include TOMS Shoes, which reminds us that, “90% of vision impaired people live in developing countries. 285 million people in the world are vision impaired. 80% don’t have to be.”
Other facts include:
Children who receive lenses to correct vision tend to learn better and have a lower rate of behavioral issues in school;
Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness. A 15-minute surgery can remove them.
If you’d like to learn more about World Sight Day, just search the phrase in your browser or go to the IAPB website. There is a ton of information readily available at your fingertips.
