New Sight With the Help of Science

Imagine living life in the dark. 300 million people in the world do this on a daily basis, and have come to know blindness as a fact of their lives. Many of them were blind at birth, but for others, conditions such as macular degeneration have led to blindness over time. But there is a product that may provide hope for those who wish to see, but cannot.

The ESight 3 is a visor-like headset. Its high-speed, high-definition camera produces live video feed of things in the viewer’s line of sight, then sends it to be processed. The resulting image shoots back over to the headset, giving the wearer the ability to see. All of these steps occur in microseconds, and some of the materials can easily fit into the wearer’s pocket or purse.

With a 70 percent success rate so far, the ESight 3 seems to work best for patients who’ve experienced eye trauma, glaucoma, optic atrophy and about ten other eye conditions. Currently, the apparatus costs $10,000, down from $15,000 just a few years ago. If the price reduction trend continues, the ESight may prove to be just as affordable as it is successful, in just a few more years.
