“Digital Eye Strain”: It’s Not a Rock Band

Americans look at their cell phones an average of 100 times a day.

That’s a lot of emojis.

There’s more: 30 percent of adults use some kind of digital device for at least nine hours a day, and one in four children focuses their attention on one each day for at least three hours. These habits can lead to a recent, growing phenomenon called Digital Eye Strain. Symptoms include blurriness of vision, irritation, inflammation, and dry eyes.

According to CBS News, the largest population of sufferers are Millennials, of whom 70 percent of those surveyed report symptoms. Many physicians recommend computer eyewear for those who are frequently in front of a screen. Other suggestions include using a larger font on your device, positioning your monitor so that the top of your screen is directly across from your eyes, sitting 20-40 inches away from your screen, and the tried and true 20/20/20 rule: every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for at least twenty seconds.

Follow these simple tips and you may be able to avoid becoming another statistic.
