Blog:Contact lenses, court trials and creativity in marketing
Sometimes things can get a little hairy in the wonderful world of eyewear.
It was announced this week that the Federal Trade Commission is suing 1-800-CONTACTS. Why? Because the FTC alleges that the largest retailer of online contact lenses in the country unlawfully created anti-competitive agreements with rival online sellers that lead to restricting and misleading online searches for the public.
The FTC goes further to detail at least 14 bidding agreements with online rivals that remove competition in auctions to advertise when you, the consumer, try to search for contacts online. There’s a whole riveting story about how all of this came to be – and trust us, it could be a movie.
Well, maybe a movie of the week. On cable.
The American Optometric Association, which already has a bone to pick with 1-800-CONTACTS regarding the release of prescriptions, is all for the lawsuit and trial, which will begin next April.
We’ll have popcorn.
